Family Tree Help

Screen-by-screen user guide

Use the Help button from any app screen to open the section that matches your current journey.

Sign In

  • Sign in from the home page: Choose Sign in, complete the ImagineBest identity screen, and return to the family app signed in.
  • Session expired: Choose Sign in again, complete the identity step, and continue with a fresh session.
  • Switch account: Choose Switch account, sign in with a different email, and see only the families available to that account.
  • Sign out: Choose Sign out to leave the app and hide protected family data from the browser session.
  • Update credentials: Choose Update credentials to manage password, passkeys, and sign-in methods in the identity account area.

Families Screen

  • Review families: Open Families to see owned and shared families with role, people count, relationship count, and last saved date.
  • Open a family: Choose Open on a family row to move into the tree workspace.
  • Create a family: Choose New family, add the first person, and the app opens Family connections so you can add close relatives immediately.
  • Upload JSON: Choose Upload JSON, select a backup file, and import a family from saved data.
  • Delete or restore: Move a family to Deleted, restore it within the restore window, or permanently delete only after typing DELETE.

Family Tree

  • See the family tree: Open a family on Family Tree to see one focused visual tree for the selected family.
  • Change focus person: Search for a person in the focus box and select them to redraw the tree around that person.
  • Change view options: Open View options to change ancestor depth, descendant depth, spouse visibility, and relationship labels.
  • Family connections: Select a person and choose Family connections to add, link, import, order, and correct close relatives in one place.
  • Advanced cleanup: Use Advanced cleanup only for removals or parent moves that need an extra warning.

People List

  • Browse people: Open People to scan every person in the family as a dense list.
  • Filter people: Use search and filters to narrow the list by name, ID, place, date, or life status.
  • Focus a person: Choose a person from the list to move the tree focus to that person.
  • Copy person ID: Use copy when you need a stable person ID for support, review, or data cleanup.

Relationships

  • Browse family units: Open Relationships to see marriages, parent-child groups, and family-unit details.
  • Edit relationship: Choose edit on a relationship to update type, status, marriage details, notes, or children.
  • Delete relationship: Choose delete, review any people who may become disconnected, and confirm only when the result is correct.
  • Focus from relationship: Choose a related person from a relationship row to move the tree focus to them.

Relationship Paths

  • Find connection: Open Relationship paths, select two or more people, and see the closest relationship paths between them.
  • Compare possible paths: Review ranked paths to understand how selected people are connected through parents, spouses, and children.
  • Inspect shared people: Use the shared-people summary to find common ancestors or bridge relatives across selected people.

Reports

  • Open focused report: Open Report to generate a focused family report around the selected person.
  • Choose report scope: Pick whether the report should include a full tree, tree structure, or a single focused branch.
  • Adjust report depth: Change ancestor and descendant depth to control how much family context appears.
  • Export report: Generate or download the report for sharing, printing, or archiving.

People

  • Invite relatives from guided archive tasks when you are ready to ask for help with memories, photos, or family details.
  • Find a relative: Active archive members can see living relatives who can open the archive and message each other.
  • Share with one relative: Enter their email, keep View only when you only want them to read, and confirm the permission preview before sharing.
  • Invite a contributor: Choose Contributor when you want them to help update family information.
  • Limit contributor scope: Expand Limit contributor scope only when the contributor should suggest changes for a specific family profile or branch.
  • Review access requests: Owners and Family Managers can approve or reject invite suggestions and contributor access requests.
  • Revoke access: Choose remove access for a relative, confirm the action, and remove their access to the family.

Contributor Draft

  • Start contributing: A Contributor opens a shared family and chooses Edit to start a private draft.
  • Private draft tree: The Contributor sees one combined draft tree with badges for changes and conflicts.
  • Review own changes: The Contributor opens Changes or selects changed nodes to see human-readable details of what changed.
  • Submit whole draft: The Contributor chooses Submit changes to send the whole draft to the owner as one review request.
  • Withdraw request: The Contributor chooses Withdraw request to reopen the submitted proposal as an editable private draft.

Family Member And Contributor Requests

  • Family Member request: A Family Member can ask for contributor access from the archive member space.
  • Invite suggestion: Contributors and Family Members can suggest another relative as a Family Member.
  • Review: The Owner or Family Manager reviews suggestions before permissions change or invite emails are sent.
  • Track status: The requester can see whether a request is pending, approved, or rejected.

Owner Review

  • See pending changes: An owner opens an owned family and sees Pending changes when contributors have submitted proposals.
  • Review whole submission: The owner reviews one submitted draft with item-level changes instead of separate action requests.
  • Accept or reject items: The owner marks individual submitted items as apply or reject before final review.
  • Apply review: The owner chooses Apply review and only accepted items are applied to the approved family tree.

Audit History

  • Load audit history: Owners choose Audit history to see recent important changes for the selected family.
  • Read audit entries: Review who made a change, what action happened, and when it happened.
  • Use audit for confidence: Use audit history to confirm sharing, deletion, restoration, and review activity.

Admin

  • Open admin: Users with the admin role choose Admin to view application-level usage and account information.
  • Search users: Admins search users by email, name, or identity ID to help with support questions.
  • View user profile: Admins open a user profile to see account and app-level summary data.
  • Support requests: Admins review support requests, update status, and add a support note visible to the user.

Support, Terms, And Privacy

  • Open support: Use Support when something breaks, an invite is confusing, or a family record needs attention.
  • Avoid private content: Start with the problem, browser action, and expected result. Add family names or private notes only when needed.
  • Terms and privacy: Use the footer links for the current product terms and privacy policy before sharing family data with others.
  • Analytics promise: Usage analytics measure product usefulness, not family content.

Troubleshooting

  • Family list does not load: Choose retry, refresh the page, or sign in again if the session has expired.
  • Save fails: Check that you are signed in, that you have edit rights, and retry after the connection is stable.
  • Shared family missing: Confirm you are signed in with the invited email and ask the owner to check access.
  • Contributor cannot submit: Review conflict badges and required fields, then submit again after conflicts are resolved.
